In the new sitcom, the trio will be running a small hotel in Miami Beach.

Arthur, who wants out, will make her exit on "Girls' finale in May. She may return next season as a guest on "Golden Palace." An NBC spokeswoman Thursday would neither confirm nor deny "Golden Palace," saying: "We've just begun conversations with the producer (Tony Thomas) about the future of 'Golden "Girls" is tied for 31st place among 119 series this season. Last year CBS put the show on at night for the first time; it got a 13.5-25 and finished second in the week's rankings.

'Nuff said LOOK FOR LAVIN. ABC Entertainment last week announced a little change for its winning Tuesday lineup moving "Coach" to the sidelines for a couple of months of well-deserved rest in favor of a wife and mother, she's arrested for breaking out of prison, where she did time for armed robbery. "Northern Exposure" 10 p.m. 0 Former "Buffalo Bill" co-star Joanna Cassidy makes a now-rare TV appearance, as the widow of a hunter who was good friends with Holling and Maurice. The man's funeral wish, to be buried in a particular place, proves quite troublesome.

was watching "Northern Exposure" I always knew, for example, it was 10 p.m. Monday night. "LA. Gotta be Thursday night between 10 and 11. But once I got by my initial disorientation, I settled into a new nightly routine.

I actually did spend a bit more time with my 6-year-old daughter, talking at length about her day at school, listening to her read before bed. But my new commitment was by no means extraordinary, particularly because neither my wife nor my daughter swore off TV the week I did. At times, they even went so far as to cheerfully taunt me. "Hey, better leave the room, you don't want to see (fill in any one of my favorite shows) do you?" they'd cackle. By week's end (a Thursday through a Wednesday), I admit I was getting used to a life with less TV, even enjoying it.

But I did fall off the wagon. Just once, mind you. I was tempted enough to tune in to last week's "Saturday Night Live." And when my time was up, I greedily gorged myself on tapes of "The Simpsons," "L.A. Law" the Olympics, you name it. There were a lot of things, of course, that I didn't miss: the tabloid shows, the local evening news with the two anchors that always make me scream at the screen, the precious minutes of life often inexplicably wasted in a numbing, knee-jerk, channel-changing search for something to watch.

Then I took a look back and thought about all I'd accomplished that week: I was a much-improved video game player, I'd read 30 pages of a novel, spent maybe two extra hours with my daughter, I moved a lot of stuff around the house, uh, er, felt a little more relaxed. But boy am I glad it's over. Who's on Letterman tonight anyhow? just signed former "Dukes of Haz-zard" star John Schneider to an eight-week contract, playing Larry Lamont, "a businessman with a diet plan," according to ABC. Schneider, also starring in "Grand SCHNEIDER. 'Loving' it.

When my editor first suggested I spend a week NOT watching television so I could write a story about it, I thought she might be slipping. Talk about cream-puff assignments. "Why don't you not watch for a week, NOT write a story and just call it vacation?" snickered a colleague, who obviously saw things the same way. My editor, as it turns out, had not gone off her rocker. I was the one who had miscalculated completely underestimating the challenge I was about to face.

Because even though I watch television for a living, I'm still a devotee. There are few moments in my off hours, in fact, when the television isn't on. Sad, I know, but true. Here was the opportunity, I imagined, to break TV's spell, to spend quality time with my family, pick up one of the many books stacked up on my night table and actually read it. Yean, sure.

I played Game Boy the first two nights a kind of video methadone for a TV addict like me. By the third night I calmed down a bit, put the Game Boy away and actually did begin reading a book. When I tired of that I just wandered the house, cleaning up a corner here, noticing things I'd never noticed before. The house seemed eerily quiet. Without the background buzz of the television; it seemed as if school was out, the campus cleared and I was alone in the dorm.

I noticed, too, that I'd lost all sense of time, or more accurately, prime-time. My nightlife, it seemed, was mostly divided in my mind into new Linda Lavin sitcom, "Room for Two." "Coach" will return in time for the May ratings sweeps with brand-new episodes, an ABC spokesman pledged. "Room for Two" stars Lavin as a recently widowed woman who visits her TV producer daughter Hotel" on Broadway, will become involved with Jack Forbes (played by Christopher Cass) and Shana Vochek (Susan Keith). After reading the first script, the advisory board of child psychologists and psychiatrists recommended it be more specific that it more clearly state, for that an argument between parents does not mean divorce, said Singer. And so it was rewritten.

The script has Gordon (a man, not a Muppet) allay the fears of Snuffy's friends, Telly, Elmo and Big Bird, by saying: "Hey, calm down! Just because parents have an argument, or get upset with each other, doesn't mean they're getting a divorce or that they don't love each other anymore." And Gordon makes it clear that it is not Alice or Snuffy's fault that their parents are getting divorced. In the program, Alice, who is about 2, pounds and kicks her teddy bear as she listens to her parents arguing in the next cave. "The kids came away with neg-; ative messages," Singer said. They said arguments did mean divorce. A number said the parents would no longer be in love with them." Too painful, apparently, for children to watch. Plans for "Sesame Street's" first show on divorce were canceled after 60 preschool-age critics previewed the program two weeks ago and misunderstood it.

In the show's 23 years, Big Bird, Bert and Ernie and the Count have seen their street of letters, numbers and song visited by death, adoption, marriage and birth. But introducing divorce proved unexpectedly difficult. Rather than ease children's fears, the segment frightened them. "Divorce is an extremely anxiety-provoking subject for a 4-year-old," said executive producer Dulcy Singer. All segments are researched and tested with child experts.

But rarely does "Sesame Street" pre-screen with children. The segment had been scheduled for April 10, but day-care children in New York and New Jersey "misunderstood" much of the show's message, Singer said.
